None of this is enforced by GA4 or any other tool. The discipline is on you, which is why we lowercase and trim on the way out.
utm_source
The referring site or platform. Examples: google, facebook, newsletter. Keep the vocabulary short and locked.
utm_medium
The channel class. Examples: cpc, email, social, referral, display. This is what GA4 uses to group traffic.
utm_campaign
The campaign label. Examples: spring-sale, product-launch. Reuse the same string across every creative in that campaign.
utm_term
The paid search keyword. Typically populated by the ad platform, not by hand. Useful for keyword-level reporting in GA4.
utm_content
The creative or placement variant. Useful for A/B testing two links pointing at the same landing page.
